** What opportunities are there for postgraduate studies in the Fine Art Department?

Students who want to pursue postgraduate studies in the making of art may register for an MFA. For MFA studies, students produce a body of works and write a dissertation or long essay. We also offer postgraduate courses in Art History. A BA (Hons) in Art History is available to students who have completed three years of Art History & Visual Culture, and this enables you to proceed to MA and PhD studies. Students studying a BA (Hons) complete coursework as well as a long essay. Students studying an MA write a thesis. Students studying a PhD write a dissertation.

** What value is there is taking Art History & Visual Culture without studying Studio Practice?

Art History & Visual Culture teaches you visual literacy. It enables you to interpret not only art works but also all kinds of visual forms and images. Also, it teaches you to articulate this understanding verbally and in written form. It provides you with skills to work in a variety of art-related fields (see the question on career opportunities below). And apart from having an independent status and use value, Art History & Visual Culture is also an excellent complement to courses such as Journalism and Media Studies, English, Drama, Music, History, Psychology, Philosophy and Sociology – indeed just about any areas of study offered within the Humanities Faculty.

Famous artists in the context of this article will be taken from those most popular. Famous or best artists is something too hard for a mere mortal like me to quantify simply whereas popularity, particularly on the internet can be calculated. Art is all about subjectivity, so i don’t claim for the following list to be exhaustive or fully comprehensive, but please treat it as a fun way to discover more about artists you already know about, and to perhaps find some new artists that you had not heard of before. This is the main purpose of this article. The artists are not listed in any particular order, so the final entry would not necessarily be the least famous artist, it is more a general collection to browse through.

Michelangelo was an Italian Renaissance painter. He was considered by many to be the key Renaissance figure because of his versatility and knowledge across a wide range of disciplines. Michelangelo’s most famous paintings include The Torment of Saint Anthony, Manchester Madonna, Doni Tondo, The Entombment, Battle of Cascina, Leda and the Swan, The Last Judgment, The Martyrdom of St Peter & The Conversion of Saul (1542-50)

Leonardo Da Vinci was an Italian genius best known as a painter, sculptor and architect, though he performed well in a wide variety of disciplines. Along with Michelangelo, Da Vinci is believed to be one of the most extraordinary artists of all time with such diversity and quality attained over his whole career. Da Vinci most famous paintings include The Adoration of the Magi, Salai as John the Baptist & Annunciation.

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian painter and a key member of the Vienna Art Nouveau art scene aswell as a famous Symbolist artist. Klimt produced paintings of the highest order, which he is best known for, plus wall murals and other art mediums. Klimt’s primary subject was the female body as shown in some of his most famous works. He also is well known for use of gold leaf paint which many artists do not use frequently. Klimt most famous paintings include The Kiss, Judith & Danaë.

Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch artist from the Impressionist era and well known for his connections to Paul Gauguin and his art collector brother, Theo. He was a pioneer of Expressionism with enormous influence on 20th century art, especially on the Fauves and German Expressionists. Some of his paintings are now among the world’s best known, most popular and expensive works of art. Van Gogh most famous paintings include Sunflowers, Starry Night, Potato Eaters & Van Gogh Self-portraits.

Claude Monet was a founder and key member of French impressionist painting and also one of the most famous landscape artists of all time, alongside the likes of Van Gogh, Turner & Constable. Impressionism is taken from the name of his painting Impression Sunrise. Claude Monet most famous paintings include Water Lilies, Japanese Bridge & Camille Monet Portraits.

Pablo Picasso was a Spanish Cubist painter and one of the most recognized figures in 20th-century art, he is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) and Guernica (1937), his depiction of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.

David Hockney is an English painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer and photographer, based in Yorkshire, United Kingdom, although he also maintains a prominence in London. An important contributor to the Pop art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century. David Hockney most famous paintings include Los Angeles Pool, Garrowby Hill & Malibu.

Leonardo da Vinci was an illegitimate son of Messer Piero Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci, a Florentine notary, and Caterina, a peasant. He was born on April 15 1452 in the Tuscan hill town Vinci Italy. As his mother married another man, Leonardo lived in the household of his father, grandparents and uncle, Francesco. Little is known about Leonardo’s early life that’s why a lot of people came up with various conjectures in order to explain his great success. Leonardo’s father and mother both had other children after his birth.

Leonardo at a young age had the access to a lot of books. These books were scholarly texts of his friends and family. This was also the period in which he was introduced to Andrea del Verrochio, a well known painter, sculptor and goldsmith in Florence. As the workshop is one of the most prestigious intellectual centers at the time, Leonardo already had the edge and potential to become an achiever in his own right. But he would eventually exceed everyone’s expectations. Right now he is not just considered an achiever but a universal genius for all ages. As he was learning a lot from Verrochio, he painted a lot of art works. A highlight of his paintings at this time was an angel in Verrochio’s “Baptism of Christ.” The painting clearly showed that da Vinci was a better painter than Verrochio. Even if he only painted the angel, Leonardo did so much better.

After his stint at Verrochio’s workshop, Leonardo started to establish himself as an artist. About five years later he served the Duke of Milan even if he still had to complete “The Adoration of the Magi,” his first commission in Florence. For about seventeen years Leonardo lived and did many things in Milan. The highlights of these activities are his various achievements in the fields of science and art. Aside from painting and sculpting numerous works, he also designed buildings, machinery, and weapons. As if all of his achievements were not enough, he also did piles of studies on geometry, nature, architecture, mechanics, municipal construction, and flying machines.

In the years after the Duke fell from power, Leonardo continued to have more commissions with other people. He also traveled throughout Italy. The succeeding years saw him working for the Pope but he never got tired of producing achievements and studies on the other fields. Long before he died, Leonardo was already one of the greatest individuals to conquer the world.

Do your walls seem dull and uninviting? Do you long for a cozy, welcoming room? Consider decorative wall painting techniques, such as sponging, ragging, stenciling or stamping. Even if you have no experience, you can brighten even the dullest room quickly and cheaply with one of these easy decorative wall painting techniques.

Before painting your room, pick out a color scheme for your walls. When you chose your paint, remember that many painting techniques use two shades of one color. If you are using one of the techniques that does use two shades of color, you can pick a darker color than you normally would chose for your base color, since the lighter top color will make the final result much lighter.

To sponge or rag a wall, paint on your base color and let it dry thoroughly. Then, dip your sponge or rag into the lighter paint color and sponge or drag the lighter color over the base coat until you are satisfied with the effect. If you are unhappy with your final result, you can repaint any areas that you don’t like with the base coat. Once the repainted area is dry, repeat the faux painting technique.

If you are considering using a decorative painting technique such as stenciling or stamping, you may just want to create a wallpaper effect by stamping or stenciling a simple design over your base coat. However, you may want to go a step further with your project and use stencils or stamps to create a faux brick or stone wall. You don’t need to be an artist to create one of these faux finishes. Just follow these simple steps. First, paint the walls with the color you chose for the mortar between the bricks or stones. Once the base coat is dry, stamp or stencil your bricks or stones over the base coat. Once the brick or stonework is dry, spatter a bit of the darker color over your faux art to give it depth and make it appear more realistic.

Creating faux effects such as making your walls look like they are made of plaster or suede can also really make your room stand out. You can easily learn how to create these seemingly difficult finishes at your local paint store. Paint bases that automatically give a suede or textured effect to the walls are a shortcut that even artists use to create fun finishes.

Finally, no matter which decorative wall painting technique you choose, remember that it is just a few layers of paint. You can always redo the finish on your walls as you learn more about the art of decorative painting.

If you are an art collector then you are going to want to know where to find oil paintings for sale for a low cost. Now granted you can find the reprints and prints for a low cost, but the originals can end up costing you quite a bit more.

The first place that you can check would be with an art gallery that specializes in paintings. Shopping at these can be a fairly expensive option, but if you are an avid collector then cost will not be an issue for you. Shopping at these locations will also help provide you with some protection from people selling reproductions as originals and they might even be able to provide you with paperwork verifying authenticity.

The second place to check for these items would be your larger craft shows. You might not think about using this venue, but at some of these you will be able to locate local artist that are selling their paintings here for a reasonable cost. By purchasing here though you will also notice that the art will usually have the artist that made it present as well.

The third place to look for these would be at various flea markets. Flea markets might not seem like a great place to shop for art, but if you consider that some people will end up clearing out attics to provide products for these locations you might be able to find the diamond in the rough here and obtain it for a low cost.

The fourth place to look for these would be on the internet. With the internet becoming so popular today you will notice more people are selling items of all shapes and sizes on here. You can at times manage to find some excellent oils on the internet at a very reasonable price. If it is possible you will want to make sure that they are able to provide you with a certificate that they are authentic paintings and not reproductions.

The fifth place that you can find these for sale at would be estate sales. If you are a buyer of art then you will notice that many people have estate sales when they pass on hosted by their families. At times the families will not know what all the person has in the home and sell everything. Some times the items that they are selling can include the original oils that you are looking for.

As an art collector you probably realize that original paintings will cost you more than prints. However, finding the original oil paintings for sale can be a challenge at times. The five places that are mentioned above will provide you with a great start as to where to look to find these items. You will also want to realize that other places will be able to provide you with what you are looking for as well.

Buying and selling art can be a lucrative profession as well as an enjoyable pastime. Attending art auctions can be profitable, entertaining, and a great place to meet fellow art enthusiasts. There are tips and tricks to enhance your buying and selling experiences in the art world. Not only are there several types of auctions, but there are also several types of art buyers. Whether you are an art collector, investor, or dealer, art auctions give you the opportunity to procure pieces that will appreciate over time.

Types of Art Auctions

Auctions can be broken down into three types: estate, consignment, and mixed. They can be held at a person’s residence, which is usually the case with small estate auctions, at a person’s place of business, in the case of consignment auctions, or in storage warehouses where items are often sold in lieu of unpaid rent. Interesting art pieces can be found at any one of those events.

The goal of an estate auction is to sell all remaining items of a former residence. An estate auction will normally not place any reserves on items (a reserve is the minimum amount for which an item will be sold). Hence, estate auctions are ideal for finding bargains as everything must be sold no matter how low the offer.

Conversely, at consignment auctions, fixed minimum prices are set on specific items, and if an item does not recover the set price, it will not be sold at that particular time. Consignment auctions will usually hold weekly sales, with the lowest prices being offered mid-week. Mixed auctions will sell items from smaller estates and will accept consignments as well.

Finding Art Auctions

The easiest way to find art auctions in your area is to do a search online. Simply type in your topic and your city and you should be able to find a list of the auctions being held in your vicinity. Another avenue is to check the local newspapers and dailies. Nearby antique or art stores can be useful resources as they often carry pamphlets or fliers advertising regional art auctions and sales. Lastly, explore online auction sites such as eBay, where you can purchase articles without leaving the comfort of your home.

Preparation

Before attending an auction, it is wise to confirm the date, place, and time. Be especially savvy by attending the preview, where potential bidders can examine the items to be sold at their leisure. Some auction sites will have previews a few days prior to the auction, while others open their doors only for a few hours preceding the auction. Upon arrival at the preview, you may register as a bidder. Be sure to ask about premiums when you register as some auctioneers add 10% to the highest bid or take commission from the selling price. It is important to know which policy will be used in order to avoid paying more than you bargained for. Bring a note pad and pencil with you to jot down the details of items that are of interest.

Types of Art

In accordance with its use, artwork can be divided into three categories: decorative art, collectable art, and investment art.

Decorative art is used to enhance spaces. It is often thematic and will add flair and personality to a setting. The art pieces are rarely originals by famous artists and generally possess little intrinsic value. Decorative art does not usually appreciate in value, and therefore is not a lucrative investment.

Collectable art refers to art pieces that are bought based on the assumption that there is already an existing market for them because there are other interested parties. It is unwise to hold on to collectable art in the hope that it will eventually become more valuable. If it is a handsome piece, keep it, but if it holds no strong interest to you, sell it. Collectable works are not long-term investment worthy.

There are various abstract art galleries found all over the world that display all forms of abstract artwork including paintings, sculptures and many more. Some of these galleries also showcase mixed media paintings, which highlight abstract art with a 3D effect.

Abstract art is also known as non-figurative painting that normally consists of a lot of colors, lines, textures and forms. Abstract art has various aspects such as still life, landscape, urban landscape and so on, which are showcased very well in the exhibitions held at the abstract art galleries. There are three main styles of abstract art mainly cubism, neoplasticism and abstract expressionism. New York is very much influenced by the third form of abstract art, that is abstract expressionism and has a number of abstract art galleries displaying this particular abstract art form. There are various artists in New York who practice abstract expressionism but they use this form in different interesting ways. For instance, certain artists project a landscape sensibility in their abstract paintings, whereas the others make use of denser structures and bolder colors that often make the paintings bizarre and complex. Some of the artists also make use of calligraphic gestures in their artwork, whereas the others use stencil and brushwork to add layers to their abstract works.

Abstract art galleries display all abstract pieces of art from watercolor paintings, oil paintings to mixed media paintings. They highlight both ancient as well as contemporary abstract art. Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Piet Mondrian and Mark Rothko are amongst the many popular abstract artists known for their different forms of abstract artwork.

Here are few hints which will help you narrow down your list of purchasable sketch paintings, especially when you have decided to pick them from the vast collections on display in the art galleries. If you are a serious collector of artworks, then you should take a look at all the sketch paintings and decide which ones you like best. Having a solid idea about several modern art movements such as Art Deco, Fauvism, Op Art, Impressionism, Expressionism, Art Nouveau, Surrealism, Cubism, and Pop Art will be very handy while shopping for artworks.

Browsing and short-listing your choices and preferences is mandatory if you wish to make the best purchases from art galleries. It is possible that you will lose your thread of thoughts once you are exposed to innumerable artworks present in art galleries. So, be well prepared and collect the relevant ideas or trends by discussing with the knowledgeable persons. You will definitely find it easy to filter the unworthy ones, especially if you know how to make the difference between valuable and less valuable works of art.

It is not hard to collect the complete details about each of the art movements or any other facts, thanks to the online searches. It is essential that you understand the differences between various sketch paintings purchasable at the art galleries with the assistance of the gallery owner. You can be choosy based on the artists too, namely, Dali in Surrealism, Picasso in Art Nouveau, Fauvism which includes Matisse, Monet of Impressionism and so on. It is not a must that you should turn yourself into an art expert for purchasing from the art galleries but with some basic knowledge, your searches will become more specific.

Last but not the least; your budget plays a deciding role while you shop for any kind of artworks. So, it will be prudent if you redesign your choices based on the options available for your estimated budget. In fact, sketch paintings are available in a wide range of budgets and thus your artistic taste will determine which ones will suit you best.

Culinary arts education is luckily available throughout the world. A lot of culinary programs are already offered for you to choose from. According to a recent survey, the American Culinary Federation (ACF), which is the leader of standards for culinary professions, has already accredited more than 100 schools offering culinary programs. These programs are offered for people to enroll in and obtain the knowledge and skills necessary in the culinary field.

As mentioned, the culinary education begins by choosing a program. It is important to note that the culinary programs normally abide to the strict guidelines and rules maintained by the ACF. One of those rules is to cover approximately three years of culinary arts education with emphasis on implementing preparation and lab courses. This coverage is typically considered along with emphasis on sanitation, menu planning and cost, nutrition, as well as business.

There are also certain programs in culinary arts that are designed for those who wish to obtain an associate degree and certification in culinary. This area of culinary education is in the first place developed to provide the people the chance to develop their potentials in cooking. Also, the certifications are considered as an advanced form of culinary education that it is offered to ensure that the ones practicing the craft are good enough to be considered as professionals.

Another important part of the culinary education is the training or apprenticeship. The apprenticeship programs now come in great number, each features areas of study that are to some degree unique from the others. However, for the apprenticeship to be taken, the student taking up culinary education must have completed first a three years study which include both classroom instruction and work experience. And, knowing how important the apprenticeships are in culinary arts education, it is no wonder that today about more than 80 apprenticeship programs are already available.

The culinary arts education, with all the stages and requirements that needed to be considered, is very expensive. Yes, attending a culinary arts school can be one of the biggest investments you can ever make. But knowing how proper education is important in developing not just your knowledge in the craft, but your skills and talents, the total benefits of attending a culinary arts education outdo the price.
